Kate’s Smocked Bishop Dress

After I posted the photos of my smocking pleater box, a friend of mine from out of state sent me a picture of a smocked bishop dress and asked if I could make one like it for her little girl. She needed a size 5, which would be the biggest smocked bishop I’d ever made before.

It had just a simple two step, whole space wave around the bottom, which I knew would be easy, but the main focal point of the dress was a name smocked across the front of the yoke. The waves and the dress I knew I could do, but I’d never smocked letters before. So once again I did research and found out what was available as far as smocking plates went.

I ended up buying Ellen McCarn’s Count and Spell plate, but once it arrived I saw that the letters were too small. I used them as a guide and a starting point for my larger letters.

In the original photo the dress was white with hot pink smocking, but Mama was afraid white would be a disaster for her little Miss Kate. She asked for hot pink with white smocking. While out purchasing the fabric and notions for the dress I found some precious hot pink with white polka dot fabric and send a Mama a quick text and photo of it. She loved it was glad I asked before buying a solid fabric.

I had a lot of fun making and smocking the dress. It was a challenge and I learned something new. Hopefully I’ll get a photo of Miss Kate in her dress to share!
